Learn About Our Project:
Rex Pyrenees wiped blood from his muzzle and adjusted his grip on his sword. He looked around for his attacker, but all he could see was the forest around him, surrounded by the ominous black bark of the trees. Pan Dachshund slipped from between two of the imposing trees, silent as a whisper, his arrow nocked and ready on his bow. He growled a challenge to the demon and immediately let go.
The demon screamed, and Rex barked triumphantly. “Begone, foul demon!” The mighty guardian swung at the blood that appeared in the air from the hunter’s arrow. The blade sliced open invisible flesh. The demon screamed again, and then didn’t make any noise at all.
Yosha Pug removed her paws from her eyes. “Is it gone?” she asked, her wrinkles quivering.
Rex towered over her, pushing the button on his sword’s hilt. The demon’s blood sizzled on his blade, turning into dark smoke. “You can open your eyes now, lady Yosha,” he said, looking at her to make sure she was unhurt.
Pan snorted as he slid the bow across his back before sitting on his haunches. “Sure, now that she’s done barking her Man-damned head off. If I hadn’t shot that thing....”
Rex turned a stern look at Pan. “Her barks warned us to the presence of the demon, did they not?”
Yosha sat awkwardly next to Rex. “Pan’s right, Rex. I put you all in danger.”
“No, my lady,” Rex rumbled. “It’s this forest, lousy with demons to plague us. It’s no wonder that the necromancer built his tower in the middle of such evil.”
“Oh, that’s not entirely true,” Yosha said, standing up excitedly. She spun in a circle until she found her rucksack, discarded in her eagerness to flee the demon. Opening it, she pulled out a thin book covered in old leather. “According to legend, the necromancer’s tower was here long before this area was even called the Dark Forest.” She quickly flipped through pages before finding what she was looking for.
“Some people say the demons were summoned by the cats of House Sphinx, but my uncle Murra heard that the demons only returned long after Man banished them.”
Pan stood up on all fours and started pacing around the group. “Look, it doesn’t matter when the tower was made or why. All that matters is what we need to get from it....”
“I know. The Vessel of Rejuvenation,” Yosha muttered. “One of the lost artifacts of Man.”
"Welcome to a world of fantasy adventure in the ancient future. I’m Eddy Webb, and this is Princess Yosha Pug… and over there is Pan Dachshund."
"We want to talk to you about Pugmire. It’s a tabletop roleplaying game I’ve been working on for a couple of years now. Pugmire is the biggest kingdom in a world in which dogs have built a new society."
"Anyway, they live in the ashes of our world far in the future, seeking adventure and redemption. Think Lord of the Rings meets Planet of the Apes, but with dogs."
"These dogs have been uplifted to use tools and language, and they seek to rediscover the world they’ve inherited. Some dogs use the remnants of human technology, but they believe it to be magic handed to them by their lost gods. Others seek to create an ideal civilization, using a Code of Man compiled from ancient but fragmented lore left behind by humanity."
"Enemies of Pugmire can either be monstrous, like demon-possessed zombies, or simply other misunderstood people, such as the cats of the Monarchies of Mau."
"Dogs have a moral code that classifies some people as “good” and others as “bad,” but not “evil.” That’s reserved for insane monsters that only seek destruction and chaos. The world is dangerous and mysterious, but good dogs will persevere."
"My company, Pugsteady, is working with Rich Thomas at Onyx Path Publishing to expand on our Pugmire Early Access version (see below).
We’re running this Kickstarter so we can both make the best version of Pugmire that we can, adding more art and writing to make this a complete and amazing product. If funded, we will produce a full-color 7 x 10 hardcover book (about the size of a graphic novel), with around 184 pages.
One of the highlights of the Pugmire game include this evocative, mysterious, and family-friendly setting, presented from the perspective of iconic characters like Yosha and Pan here."
"Pugmire uses a traditional fantasy rules system (based on the d20 Open Game License). It’s been redesigned for streamlined play and easy creation of heroic dogs, with an emphasis on cooperation and action over competition and violence. To help you with your decision, I’m providing Pugmire Early Access. It’s a playable version of Pugmire that has a little over half the material you can expect in the final book."
"Once you pledge, you'll be able to look at the very first Backer Only Update here on this site and get the link to download the Pugmire Early Access PDF so you can start playing right away!"
"As you can see, this is more than just a bare-bones document, but a glimpse into what the final book could really look like."
"With your help, we’ll be able to make a game that not only adults can play among themselves, but also something that people can play with their families."
"More than that, we want this Kickstarter to help us put Pugmire into stores. We love retailers, but we know that modern publishing methods don’t always make it easy for them to get books into their stores. With Pugmire, we want to try and get at least one print run of the game into their hands, so everyone can get a chance to experience it."
Eddy and Rich will be discussing Pugmire on various blogs and podcasts as this Kickstarter runs, so here are some links to those:
- “Well, now you can play as a personified version of your pup in a new tabletop game Pugmire. The game is set in the future where dogs have created a Medieval-style society, complete with magic, evil cats, and monster-sized ants.” (The Nerdist, January 29, 2016)

Contribute any amount you want, bearing in mind the levels of contribution and their commensurate rewards over there on the right. If we hit our goal, you’ll get the reward that goes with your level of contribution. PDFs and Print on Demand versions will be made available first in the form of a coupon from our online sales partner, DriveThruRPG.
Pugmire will take multiple months from the closing date to print and ship. During that time we will be using Backerkit to process and deliver your pledge Rewards, Add-ons, and anything additional you wish to add on after the KS is over. Backerkit has been the back-end service for about a thousand Kickstarters and has a sterling reputation for customer service and security.
"Eddy here, with one last comment: unlike previous Kickstarters by Onyx Path, which were based on well-established worlds, we're still working on creating and developing Pugmire. So we’re offering a special opportunity to contribute to the world as I’m building it! Check out the tiers on the right – there’s even one where you can use your dog as inspirations for a piece of art, or even as a completely new character to the world of Pugmire!"

This is Onyx Path Publishing's twentieth Kickstarter, and the company has learned enough (sometimes painfully) to make some tweaks to goals, reward tiers, and prizes. This knowledge has been applied to Onyx Path's first partnership with Pugsteady as well as the FAQ below:
